Building Insect Hotels

Provide shelter and protect from predators

Many wild bee species are threatened with extinction today due to industrial agriculture and destruction of natural habitats. At the same time, about 150 different crops and around 80 per cent of wild plants in Europe depend on pollination by insects. By providing the right habitats we can greatly increase the number of beneficial insects in our gardens. It is crucial that the right materials are used for nesting aids. These must be as close as possible to the nesting structures of the wild bees' natural habitats. In addition, the location should be as dry and sunny as possible.

Seed Swap

Share seeds from heirloom plants

Many crops are nowadays threatened with extinction or have already disappeared. At the same time old seeds are often much better adapted to the regional conditions and soil composition. The plants also have a more intense aroma and are even easier to care for than the hybrid varieties. In the past, our grandparents kept seeds every year to plant again the next year. Neighbours, friends and family often swapped among themselves. A seed swap event brings back this old tradition and therefore helps to preserve and dispense old and local seed varieties among gardeners and farmers.

Tree Patrons

Irrigating public trees during dry season

Trees on the city streets are vulnerable to droughts in hot summers, and the ground near the tree may be compacted by cars, bikes, rubbish bins (e.g. which makes it harder for rainwater to reach the tree and is especially damaging to young trees). Citizens can become tree patrons for a specific tree near to their homes and thus receive guidance and support how to turn the tree base into a small flower or herb garden that protects and is beneficial to the tree and improves the city streetscape.

Costs: € - Costs include buying seeds or tools for creation and maintenance of the plot, but most of the investment for this project is person's time and dedication.
