Bike Bridge

Free cycling lessons and bike repair

"Bike Bridge" activities are focussed on giving free bike lessons and bike repair workshops for community members who do not have these skills yet is a highly valuable promotion of the sustainable transformation of the traffic sectors. Additionally, it brings more independence and self-esteem of the future cyclists and can help to reduce economic stress as they are no longer car-dependent. Cycling and repair workshops can be given by volunteers.

Critical Mass

Demonstration by bike to claim street space

"Critical Mass" bike tours are a form of direct action, appealing to councils, governments and road planners to stop prioritising motor traffic and instead properly and thoughtfully design in the safety of pedestrians and cyclists as well. Participants in critical mass events meet at a set location and time and travel as a group through their neighbourhoods on bikes. The idea is for people to group together to make it safe for each other to ride bicycles through their streets, based on the old adage: there's safety in numbers (which gives reference to the term "critical mass"). Mostly these events of cyclists reclaiming the streets are held as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organised demonstrations. This stance allows Critical Mass to argue a legal position that its events can occur without advance notification of local police. Critical Masses are typically held on the last Friday of every month, rooting back to an initial event in 1992 in San Francisco. Today, the event is being held in over 300 cities around the world.

Walking Bus

Safe way to school for young children

The Walking Bus is designed to encourage people from a specific demographic in the community to walk together to a centralised location, for example, it could support older people to walk to a day centre. The bus can run to and from the location on a regular and reliable basis so that the bus becomes an event that participants will look forward to and want to get involved with. It can be managed by volunteers. Engaging in regular walks encourages physical activity and social interaction, helping those who may be dealing with stress or anxiety. Pedibus is a similiar concept for Children in the same school/kindergarden when the new school year begins (recommended 4-6 weeks). Like a bus, the Pedibus collects Children at specific spots and at specific times. Accompanied by a volunteered leader (grownup), the group leads the walks to school.

Costs: €-€€ (costs depends on availabilty of volunteers (incl project leader) and other cost such as flyers, travel costs for volunteers)
